Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology

Department Description

The department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology provides a Centre for teaching scholarly activities, deals with patient care, and is concerned with the diagnosis of a wide range of diseases in the oral and maxillofacial region. The department deals with teaching Oral Anatomy & Tooth Morphology, Embryology, and Oral Histology for I BDS and Oral Pathology & Microbiology for II & III BDS during undergraduation. Our department is involved in training postgraduate students in the specialty of Oral Pathology and Microbiology. Our teaching module includes live demonstrations, slide discussions, clinical training, identification of hard and soft tissue specimens, histopathological and microbiological investigations, exfoliative cytology, and salivary analytical studies. We strive to provide a quality and accurate diagnosis for any histopathological evaluation. Our department is well equipped with advanced equipments for diagnostic purposes.

We have a well-maintained museum with formalin-fixed post-operative specimen, dental casts, models, posters to broaden the knowledge for students. The Oral Pathology department is actively involved in providing services to the patients in the areas of hematology, histopathology, cytology, and microbiology, and salivary analysis. Various research projects are carried out by the postgraduate students and the teaching staff. CDE programs, certificate courses, value-added courses, OOO symposiums and workshops are periodically conducted by our department to enhance the knowledge  of  Undergraduate  and  Postgraduate  students.    Undergraduate  and   Postgraduate students are guided and trained for scientific papers and poster presentations in national and international conferences.

Vision

The department of oral and maxillofacial pathology strives to be recognized for academic excellence, histopathological diagnosis and patient care with oral cancer awareness and research.

Mission

• To Provide patient care by means of diagnostic pathological, cytological, and forensic odontological services of the highest quality.
• Stimulate a systematic approach to guide students thereby contributing to the delivery of competent graduates.
• To provide excellent training in normal oral and paraoral anatomy, histology, and embryology.
• To guide the students in diagnosing the common disorders of orofacial region by histopathological examination.
• To teach the students the basic concepts of microscopy and its applications, histopathology, cytology, hematology, salivary analysis, and other diagnostic methods.
• To provide early diagnostic approach for oral cncaer by means of exfoliative cytology and oral PAP smear technique.
• We impart training in the art of carving the morphology of teeth, which guides students in restorative procedures.

Histopathology

Histopathology in vital for diagnosing a wide range of diseases, including cancer, infections, and autoimmune disorders. It allows for precise tissue analysis, helping to identify the nature and extent of abnormalities

Cytology

Cytology is a key tool for early disease detection, particularly for cancer, by examining individual cells from body fluids or tissues. It is minimally invasive, cost-effective, and provides rapid diagnostic results, aiding in the early diagnosis and management of various conditions.

Immunohistochemistry

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is highly useful in diagnosing and classifying cancers by detecting specific proteins in tissues. It helps differentiate between similar-looking diseases, determine tumor origins, and predict treatment responses. IHC also plays a critical role in research and personalized medicine.
