Public Health Dentistry

Department Description

The Department of Public Health Dentistry at Adhiparasakthi Dental College and Hospital aims to prevent oral diseases and promote oral health in the community as a whole. Our department’s motto is “To integrate oral health into everyone’s life”. Oral Health promotion is done by conducting dental awareness programs through various camps, role plays, Rally, Skit, demonstration, and signal campaigns. Outreach activities including screening as well as treatment dental camps are conducted periodically in the surrounding villages of Melmaruvathur to benefit the school children and general public. The importance of oral health promotion in improving their quality of life is emphasized and utilization of the dental services is encouraged.
Tobacco cessation center is actively functioning in the college to counsel and motivate the patients who are willing to quit tobacco (smoking and smokeless forms) and contribute towards reduction of tobacco related mortality and morbidity.

Two satellite dental clinics are established in Madurantakam and Venmalagaram to provide affordable dental services in an accessible manner. Both the satellite clinics are situated within a circumference of 25 kms from Adhiparasakthi Dental College and Hospital. A specialty clinic is situated in Uthiramerur where comprehensive dental care is provided at minimal cost.

The undergraduate students are educated with a sense of responsibility and compassion to prevent dental diseases like dental caries, periodontal disease, oral cancer, malocclusion and edentulism. They are trained to conduct various epidemiological surveys to assess the oral health needs of the population, create oral health awareness and develop preventive and treatment strategies for the community.

Vision

To improve the oral health of the community by creating awareness towards the prevention of dental diseases and to utilize the dental services available.

Mission

The identify the dental needs of the community especially the poor and needy and to make dental services accessible and available to them
To innovate newer health education strategies suitable for the community to improve the oral health
To inculcate social responsibility among students in improving the oral health of the society
To integrate with all the dental departments and various sectors to promote oral health.

EXTENSION & OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

Our college has been established with a noble mission of rendering services to the poor and needy population through various extension and outreach activities. Dental camps are conducted regularly in the nearby villages covering four districts – Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore. Camps are organized along with other organizations such as Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Institute of Medical Sciences, Rotary Club, Lions Club and other Non-Governmental Organizations functioning in and around Melmaruvathur.

Our college has a well-equipped mobile dental bus, which has been specially customized to facilitate the oral health services in inaccessible areas, thereby providing dental services at respective villages. The Department of Public Health Dentistry conducts dental screening, treatment and oral health awareness camps to diverse population like school children, elderly population and special groups. The main goal of the camps is to enhance the oral health awareness and help the people to understand the significance of oral health and general health relationship.

The Department of Public Health Dentistry & Department of Preventive and Pediatric Dentistry conduct various school dental health programs including dental screening, health education, preventive programs and treatment for dental diseases at early stages.

Our college motto “Your Smile! Our Pride!” is being fulfilled in every possible way through early detection and prompt treatment of oral diseases. Oral health is an indispensable part of overall health which should be made available to all the people. To make this a reality, the Department of Public Health Dentistry is organizing Field Visit – “Dental Care at Door Steps” on weekdays to address the oral health needs of the population at their doorstep. The dental team visits the residents in their houses and does screening for oral diseases. The doubts related to dental problems are clarified by the dental team using visual aids. This house-to-house screening helps to identify the oral health needs of the population and refer them to peripheral centers or APDCH for further management.
